Our approach and philosophy

We are continually developing products that seek to increase the long-term wealth of our investors. We have a robust approach, with extensive in-house research supporting the skill and experience of our talented fund managers.

The value of stockmarket investments will fluctuate, which will cause fund prices to fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount you invested.

Our approach

Active management

We strongly believe that active investment management is the best way to deliver market-beating returns over the long term.

One of our core beliefs is that markets are not efficient. This means that, whatever the economic conditions, we believe there are always investment opportunities for those who know where to look. Our fund managers strive to add value for our clients and to outperform their peers through active stock-picking.

Original thinking

We value original thinking and independent research. We believe that our sizeable in-house analyst team gives us an edge in making investment decisions. We only invest in companies that we know well.

We do not change our investment principles just because they are out of fashion with the market place. This resolve has stood long-term investors in our funds in good stead while market fads have come and gone.

Independent views

We do not follow the herd. The consensus view can often be incorrect, so we give our fund managers the freedom to follow their own convictions.

Long-term investment horizons

We are investors, not short-term traders. We invest in companies with potential, rather than chasing short-term price trends.

Even the best businesses suffer dips in their fortunes from time to time, and at M&G we accept this fact, and refuse to allow ourselves be distracted by such short-term market noise. We take a long-term view of our holdings and our fund managers remain invested in companies where they believe there is more value to come.

The most powerful investment tool for investors is time. We believe in investing early and staying invested for the long term.

Our philosophy

Harness skill and nurture talent

Our people are the key to our success. At M&G, we employ talented fund managers and give them the freedom to act on their convictions, without being held back by a rigid house style.

Each manager develops their own rigorous approach and works within a small, performance-driven investment team. We believe this is the most efficient way to manage money, where the ultimate responsibility for performance rests with the fund manager.

Provide specialist support

We think it’s critically important to support our fund managers at every stage of the investment process, by providing them with the very best information possible.

Each fund manager is supported by our sizeable, highly specialised in-house research teams. These teams of dedicated credit and equity investment specialists play a crucial role whenever the fund manager considers a prospective investment in a company.

Additionally, our size and reach in the market means that we are also able to give our fund managers access to the best external economists and other investment professionals.

All this allows the managers to focus on what they do best - focusing on their investment strategies. It is a tried and tested approach that has helped us become one of the leading active investment management companies in the UK and Europe.
